Modular type workshop with Sheffield Hallam

Over the last three years, we have taught a series of modular typography workshops as part of the Graphic Design degree course at Sheffield Hallam.
This year, students were invited to draw inspiration from Sheffield's rich architectural heritage. Inspired by the city's unique landscapes and iconic buildings, they set out to create modular typefaces that captured the essence of Sheffield's character.
Each student was assigned a specific building within Sheffield city centre, from the sleek lines of modern skyscrapers to the intricate details of historic landmarks. Drawing inspiration from these diverse elements, they experimented with modular design principles to craft typefaces that reflected the city's vibrant spirit.
The culmination of the three-day workshop was the creation of a bespoke designed book, showcasing the students' modular typefaces in all their glory. The book serves as a celebration of the student’s creativity, their ingenuity, and their ability to find beauty in the world around them.
Following on from the event, Senior Designer at Only, Daniel Reed was invited to give a talk on the role of typography in brand design. More information about the talk can be found here.
